The Ethicist accepts all written/creative work for its main issues regardless of genre including but not limited to: creative nonfiction, essays, op-eds, fiction of all genres, poetry, and experimental or genre bending work. The only requirement for consideration of publication is that the writing have some connection to one's faith/belief tradition or lack thereof (including interfaith activity). This does not need to be the faith or non-faith tradition of the author, nor in the case of science fiction, horror, etc... does the faith or non-faith tradition need to be a real/currently existent faith.

Interfaith Insights, The Ethicist official blog, accepts guest writers year round and will pay $0.01 per word for published pieces. Interfaith Insights focuses more on essays, opinion pieces, and reflections on interfaith experiences. Work should somewhat reflect the style of pieces currently published by Interfaith America. Please send pitches or otherwise show interest in writing a blog post by emailing ethicisteditors@gmail.com.

*Submissions for The Ethicist's first issue are now closed. Thank you to all who submitted. We plan to publish annually. Please follow our Facebook or Twitter to know when we next open submissions to the general public.

Genre Specific Guidelines:

Creative Nonfiction: pieces should be a maximum of 3,000 words and in general, the shorter the better. We are not opposed to reading longer pieces if the work is exceptional in its writing and connection to our mission.

Fiction: pieces should be a maximum of 3,000 words with a preference given to shorter work that is well-edited and not previously published. We are willing to consider longer work on a case-by-case basis.

Poetry: poetry, unlike other genres, may submit up to 5 pieces for submission period. In general, poetry should be less than 50 lines in length as a general rule, though we are not opposed to reading and accepting something longer. Poetry submissions, unlike other genres, may be sent in the same word document or as multiple.
